Retinal Photography
Due to the complexity of the retinal tissue, it can be impossible to record in writing exactly what it looks like. In this case, a picture really is worth a thousand words. With retinal photographs you can compare from visit-to-visit the small changes in your retina. This helps detect and treat any disease and avoid it from aggravating thus minimizing the impact on your vision.

For this reason, our office includes retinal photographs as part of our routine eye examinations for all patients old enough to sit still for them – usually starting around 8 years of age.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) produces a cross-sectional image of the layers of the retina (the nerve and blood vessel tissue that coats the inside of the eye). OCT provides a view of the layers behind the front surface of the retina rather than just focusing surface of the retina.

This enables our optometrist to determine if there is any build-up of fluid in or behind the nerve layers of the retina or if there is a thinning or thickening of critical areas of the retinal tissue. OCT is used to detect and monitor many different eye diseases with much greater accuracy, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease.

Visual Field Testing

Eye to Eye Optometry Clinic uses visual field testing as an assessment of a patient’s peripheral vision. This is important in diagnosing and monitoring various eye conditions. The patient sits in a dimly lit room in front of a curved screen, and pushes a button whenever they see a light. The computer records any areas where the patient does not see as well as they should. Some reasons why our optometrist may book a visual field test could be a suspicion of glaucoma, inflammatory disease, and various cardiovascular conditions.

Computerized visual field testing usually takes 20-30 minutes. Visual field testing is typically covered by Alberta Health Care.
